Rethinking Graphic Novels in the Classroom: Broadening Our Concepts of Literature to Benefit Readers

Amber Heffernan

Abstract

Amber Heffernan describes how she introduced graphic novels to her grade one practicum class. She presents her observations of two struggling readers’ engagement and understanding of the text. Through her action research, Amber came to believe that students must be exposed to different kinds of literature for optimal learning. Although she agrees that some types of texts will always be valued more highly than other types by some people, she feels that her research has shown that novels are an entertaining and creative way to motivate students to read and write with a purpose.
